Davis is a big-play tight end. Davis has tremendous size
and strength (6-3,255), great hands, and a remarkable ability
for getting open. Davis and his tools will be a great asset
this year to a San Francisco offense that is increasingly
improving.
Vernon Davis was drafted by the 49ers in 2006 out of Maryland
as the 6th overall pick. Davis is the third highest tight
end drafted in NFL history. At the 2006 NFL scouting combine,
Vernon Davis ran the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds. Davis's
time is believed to be the fastest time ever recorded for
a tight end and was faster than most running backs and wide
receivers at that combine.
Vernon Davis only played in 10 games in the 2006 season
due to a hairline fracture to his left fibula. He had 20
receptions for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns. In week 14, Vernon
Davis made a 52-yard reception against the Green Bay Packers.
It was a short catch followed by a big run.
Vernon Davis is hoping to stay healthy for all 16 games
and utilize his athletic ability. Alex Smith will benefit
by Davis's great ability to get open, and Davis will benefit
by Smith's developing precision and the offense that the
49ers have in place. Vernon Davis will be pivotal to the
49ers' 2007 season.
