Steve Smith - Carolina Panthers
Steve
Smith may not have the size at wide receiver, but he definitely
has the game. Smith, at 5-9, relies on great speed and elusiveness
to create big plays. In 2006, Smith had to fight against
a lot of adversity on the field, but he still proved that
he is one of the NFL's elite receivers and a deadly weapon
for the Carolina Panthers.
Steve Smith blew up in 2005 when he won the NFL's Triple
Crown in receiving. He made 103 receptions for 1,563 yards
and 12 touchdowns. All of Smith's numbers were either the
best or tied for the best in the NFL. Steve Smith was pretty
much the talk of the 2005 postseason-until he played against
Seattle in the NFC Championship. Smith's performances against
New York in the Wild Card and Chicago in the Divisional
Playoff were sensational. He destroyed the Chicago secondary
with 12 catches for 218 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Steve Smith missed the first two games of the 2006 season
due to injury, and when he came back, he had to fight against
aggressive double coverage all season. Smith still pulled
in 83 receptions for 1,166 yards and 8 touchdowns in 14
games. His best game of the season came in week 6 against
the Baltimore Ravens where he caught 8 passes for 189 yards
and a touchdown.
Steve Smith is healthy and ready to go. While his numbers
were good in 2006, Smith still flew under the radar in comparison
to his 2005 season. This may cause teams to ease up on Smith
a bit in their game plans. Even if teams don't ease up,
Smith has proven that he can make plays regardless.
