Alex Smith - San Francisco 49ers

Smith is the future of the San Francisco 49ers. Taken as
the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Alex Smith
has some big shoes to fill in San Francisco, but he has
the teammates in place to be a great quarterback and lead
the 49ers back to their regular postseason appearances.
Alex Smith did not see a lot of playing time during his
rookie season, but he endured a baptism by fire during the
2006 season. Smith struggled regularly in the early part
of the season, but he showed great promise toward the end
of the year. For his 2006 totals, Alex Smith had a quarterback
rating of 74.8 and threw for 2,890 yards with 16 yards and
16 interceptions. Smith also gained recognition at the end
of the season by leading the 49ers to two come-from-behind
victories against Seattle and Denver.
The future for the 49ers and Alex Smith is looking brighter.
After the emergence of Frank Gore at running back last season,
Smith's confidence has to be growing. Adding to that growth
are the targets that Smith will have downfield, Arnaz Battle,
Vernon Davis, and new additions, Ashley Lelie, Daryl Jackson,
and rookie receiver Jason Hill. Joe Montana and Steve Young
may not be walking through the 49ers' door, but that may
not matter this season as Alex Smith will have the tools
in place to improve on last season and possibly lead the
San Francisco 49ers back to the playoffs.
