Draft and Free Agent Needs: AFC South

Over the next couple weeks I will be taking a look at what positions each team needs to address in the offseason either by draft or free agency. I won't go into specific players they should draft or look at because that gets into a lot of salary cap talk. Also I won't get into offensive lines too much because I don't really look too hard at those positions. I can tell if a team has a good line or a bad one but I can't pick out specific weakness (i.e. the left guard is weak against the inside rush) for individual players. I will focus mostly on offensive "skill" positions and defense.

Houston Texans: I know I said I wouldn't talk too much about the offensive lines but that will be one of the biggest holes Houston will need to address. David Carr got thrashed last year and that can't continue. They need to get him some better protection. Another need they should address is running back. A solid running back will take a lot of the pressur off of Carr. He has some decent receivers to throw to but he doesn't have enough time. A good running game would help keep the defenses honest. I didn't get too many chances to see the Houston Texans play last year so I can't comment on their defense. It appears to be decent for a second year team but time will tell. They could also use another receiver to go with Jabar Gaffney. If Carr had two good receivers to throw to he would put up some great numbers.

Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars have been in salary cap hell this year and still managed to win a few games. They had to let a lot of good players go over the past two seasons and it will probably be a year or two before they can rebuild. They have a solid cast on offense but they seem to be fairly injury prone. Fred Taylor is a great back when he plays and was able to make it through the entire year but his injuries over the past few years have cost the team dearly. They should draft a running back to help back him up. There is talk that Mark Brunell could be gone as well so a good backup is a necessitiy. Their biggest weakness on defense is probably the secondary. A good safety or cornerback would help greatly.

Indianapolis Colts: The main thing the Colts need is a set of brass balls. They have no one on their team with the "attitude" needed to win a big game. It is almost like they are too nice. The closest thing they have to that would be their kicker.

As far as players go they need players on defense. Dwight Freeney was a great draft pick last year and they need to follow that up with some help in the secondary or a linebacker to toughen them up. Offensively they are pretty set. Manning is a great quarterback and Marvin Harrison is one of the best receivers in the league. If EJ can come back to full strength next year they should be able to make it to the playoffs and get blown out again.

Tennessee Titans: The Titans are set at quarterback. Steve McNair put on one of the gutsiest performances over the past few weeks of the season. One thing they could use is a "change of pace" back to pair with Eddie George. If they could get a smaller, fast, elusive runner to come in for 10-15 plays per game it would give them an entirely different facet to their offense.

If Jevon Kerse can come back from his foot injury and if Kevin Carter can have another solid season with 10 or so sacks next year they should be OK on the offensive line. A good cornerback would be a help for them. Also another receiver with big play ability would help. They have a group of decent receivers but no one who stands out.
